Dizygotic twins, or fraternal twins, can "run in families", but only through the woman's side, as a double ovulation is required for fraternal twins to be conceived. As mentioned above, if a woman is taking fertility drugs or undergoing IVF, fraternal twins are also probable. Dizygotic twins are conceived when two separate ova are fertilized by two separate sperm. As a result, fraternal twins can be same sex or opposite sex. There is even the remote possibility that fraternal twins could have different fathers (such cases have been documented). Dizygotic twins develop in the uterus seperately, each in their own chorion (outer sac, connected to the placenta) and amnion (inner sac, containing the amniotic fluid). Dizygotic twins each have their own placenta, though if they implant in the uterus close together, it may appear on an ultrasound as one placenta, because the placentas have fused together.
